Adoption means "to take somebody else's child into one's family and become its legal parents" (Oxford Advanced Learner's Dictionary, 1995)

Adoption is "a decision to become the legal parents of a child genetically unrelated to them" (Melina, 2002).

There are various reasons why people choose to adopt.
