Sometimes, all a child needs is a pair of arms to hold them close.

Jackie, Sam and Carol

Three foster parents, Sam, Carol and Jackie, were recently interviewed by The Voice, sharing their journey into foster care. While volunteering at Mother’s Choice’s Child Care Home, Sam and his wife Carol saw many children waiting for a loving family. This inspired them to join our Project Bridge and become foster parents.

After nine years as foster parents, Sam and Carol still vividly remember caring for their first child. “His head was flattened… we later learned he had been lying in a hospital bed all along, without anyone holding him,” Sam shared. For these children, what they need most is simply a hug.

Jackie, a single respite foster parent from Project Bridge, has cared for nearly 20 children. She encourages others not to worry too much, noting that “there are many different forms of fostering.” Mother’s Choice also provides ongoing assistance throughout the journey. From her experience, the joy and fulfilment of fostering far outweigh the effort involved.

Michelle Lam from Mother’s Choice shared that children who have lived in foster families before being adopted tend to transition more smoothly. Foster care supports children’s development both physically and emotionally, helping to speed up their journey towards a permanent family.
